Phoenix City Hall  (Phoenix, AZ)
Phoenix New City Hall embodies the first sophisticated use of native and arid region plants in the urban environment. Planting and hardscape design work together to create a variety of spaces and corridors. Climate mitigation techniques are applied in various microclimates, including trees to shade streets and pedestrian routes, the sunny rolling turf area, and a water feature for additional cooling in the shady urban canyon between high-rises. Sculptural plant forms and year round color create visual interest for pedestrians, drivers and office workers.

Since five city blocks were included in this project, it was possible to create high impact streetscapes. Year round shadow patterns influenced design decisions. New City Hall is one example of a large scale project with high intensity use and a wide variety of requirements.
