Learning Tree Plaza (Phoenix, AZ)
As part of its public outreach program, City of Phoenix Water Services Department chose to join ADOT in its support of an outdoor classroom project at Arthur M. Hamilton Elementary School.

The Learning Tree Plaza, named by the students, is sited on a sliver of ADOT ROW between the I-17 frontage road and Durango St. The site was divided into five areas with designated themes to provide the basis for a wide variety of learning opportunities: Urban Wildlife Habitat, Ethnobotanic, Garden, Plaza, and Plant Diversity. In keeping with the initial promise to adhere to the student concepts, the final plan reflects the curvilinear paths, rectilinear plaza, gateway concept and material selections illustrated in the student concepts. CFSI provided detailed design for all constructed elements including gateways, plaza, dedication wall, seat walls, human sundial, science cubes, butterfly shade structure, interpretive signage and perimeter wall. Plant materials were selected and placed to support the various theme areas. The design offers learning opportunities for all ages.
